Subaru WRX Power Steering Noise Fix
A common problem for Subaru is the power steering O-ring being loose, cracked or brittle over time.
Quick fix to power steering noise during winter cold starts
If you are a Subaru owner and you have experienced a whiny noise during winter cold starts, you are not alone. A common problem for Subaru cars is the power steering O-ring being loose, cracked or brittle over time.
This 5 min solution could help mitigate the noise or may prevent your power steering from further damages.
Tools: 10mm socket wrench O-ring part#: 34439FG000
Unscrew the two 10mm bolts to remove the shroud for access to the power steering sensor.

Unscrew the bolt of the power steering senor. Then remove and replace the old O-ring that is placed on the snout or inside the power steering with the new O-ring.

The old O-ring in black has lost it's tension (like an old rubber band) which leads me to believe that air is entering the system.
Shortly after replacing, the noise will subside and steering will have less tension. By replacing this O-ring, this will let less or no air into the power steering system.
If further noise has not subsided, I'd advise you take it to a professional to have further inspection. Happy DIY!
