Building a Meaningful Data Foundation: My Key Principles for Success

I've been working with Excel for several years, and I've learned that there are a few key principles to always keep in mind: create meaningful and well-structured data, maintain cleanliness and organization, set your data up for long-term usability, and keep it simple enough to be easily adapted for reports or other uses.

Here are some guiding principles I follow when working with Excel data (in no particular order):

• Focus on keeping your data simple—you can add complexity naturally as needed.
• Begin with a simple matrix—don't stress about its appearance. Focus on structuring your data, and refine the details later as needed.
• Modify it to match the growing complexity of the report as it develops.
• When tasks become repetitive, look for opportunities to simplify your workflow by utilizing functions like VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, CONCATENATE, and others to enhance efficiency.
• When creating Key Performance Indicator (KPI) reports, try to log them as early as possible, you never know when you will need it.
• It's perfectly fine if the data isn’t fully current—record it now and allow time for it to develop and reveal meaningful insights. Patience is key!
• Attend webinars periodically to discover fresh techniques and approaches that can enhance your skills and efficiency.
• I always ask myself, "Is this taking too much of my time? How can I approach it more efficiently?" I find smarter ways to work by adding new functions or rethinking my approach to save time and improve efficiency.
